Typography

How our words are situated is important. By properly typesetting our typefaces, we maximize legibility and emphasize content hierarchy. Follow the typography guidelines below when designing content for the Mellon Foundation.

A Perfect Pairing

  • Our Serif

Joane is a beautifully drawn serif that mixes the elegance of French didones, calligraphic endings, and glyphic serifs. Its features convey warm and distinct style; it was drawn by Chilean-based W Type Foundry.

Joane is used in our logotype and as our display typeface (that is used at large sizes for headlines only).

  • Our Sans Serif

Halyard’s personality is at once familiar and pleasingly distinctive. Halyard’s familiarity results from select elements of classic designs of the 19th and early 20th centuries by Schelter+Giesecke, Miller and Richard, and Morris Fuller Benton. It was drawn in the United States by Darden Studios.

This font is used for most content types and applications.

Joane Weights

Joane is used for large text, like headlines and pull quotes. Joane’s letterforms have more detail, which can be seen at large sizes. However, this makes it difficult to read at a smaller size, in which case Halyard should be used.

Joane Italics are used to emphasize important words or phrases.

Halyard Weights

Halyard is our typeface for subheadings, body copy, and captions. Halyard’s letterforms have subtle yet distinctive characteristics while retaining the legibility of a modern sans serif.

Typesetting

When typesetting both Joane and Halyard, avoid hyphens and try to keep the line lengths relatively even. Examples of the typographic system in use can be found in the Visual System section.
